For this year's buka puasa buffet at the Palm Terrace Coffeehouse in Holiday Villa Hotel & Suites, Subang Jaya, Executive Chef Azramrizal fasted for a day just to get ideas on what people would like to have to break their fast.
He came up with a list of wholesome kampung fare from days of old that may be difficult to find today and referred to his mother for some of the recipes.
In line with the buffet theme, "Dimasak dengan penuh kasih sayang" or cooked with love," the dishes are cooked home-styled, featuring a wide spread of traditional and specialised dishes.
Although mostly Malay dishes, the buffet spread will see 13 main dishes presented, and also 15 stalls, including action stalls that feature fusion flavours ranging from Western, Japanese, Thai, China, Indian and other local favourites.
Some of the dishes available will be Sata, Lachar Beriyani, Udang Galah Rendang Berkunyit, Gulai Daging Bumbang Nyiur, Rendang Tok, Udang Galah Rendang Berkunyit and Otak-otak Buluh Lemang, which were prepared for a media preview recently.
Also available will be the Stuffed Whole Lamb Briyani with Middle East Condiments, a must-try, according to the Chef.
The first to be sampled was the Rendang Tok, a sweet, tender meat dish, eaten with rice.
One interesting-looking dish was Sata, which I first mistook for pandan chicken. Sata is actually a fish mouse wrapped in banana leaf, which was quite tasty and crunchy, thanks to the bits of coconut that was in it.
One highly-recommended dish is also the restaurant's signature dish -- Laksa Selangor. The interesting part about this laksa is that it isn't made with coconut oil or fish, but a cashew nut paste. Nevertheless, the lack of coconut milk didn't make it any less creamy or tasty. And it also comes with 12 different condiments,
For dessert, we tried the baklava, bread butter pudding and also the Ruam Mit, which all had just the right amount of sweetness.
Priced at RM73 per adult and RM55 per child, with RM1 channels to a charitable cause, the buffet will begin from the starting of the fasting month until 9 September.
An Imam will also be conducting terawih prayers at the in-house surau.
Additionally, the restaurant is also offering a Sahur buffet from midnight to 5am at RM42 per person.
